In February of this past year, the PEW Research Center did a poll on moral behavior and religion. Almost 70% of respondents said that religion was not necessary to have good morals.
That said, when asked, religious people also believed that their religion helped them to make good moral decisions. Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher and one of the central thinkers of the Enlightenment who was raised in a deeply religious household with extremely strict rules that he followed in what he was taught about Christianity.
