JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WWSB) – A 20-year-old cryptocurrency thief from Palm Coast has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for stealing more than $13 million in virtual currency in seven months from victims across the country.
A U.S. district judge in Jacksonville also ordered Noah Urban to forfeit about $4.8 million in assets, which includes cryptocurrency and other property. Urban was also ordered to pay $13 million in restitution.
Urban used aliases including “King Bob,” “Sosa,” “Elijah,” and “Gustavo Fring,” prosecutors said.
Urban entered a guilty plea on April 4.
According to court documents, from August 2022 through March of 2023, Urban was involved in stealing cryptocurrency from at least 59 victims.
Urban and others conducted targeted attacks called “SIM swaps,” to obtain victims’ personal identification information. Urban then hacked into their accounts online and stole their cryptocurrency.
During this same time frame, Urban was also part of a group that targeted employees of companies with phishing text messages.
The harvested employee credentials were then used to log in and steal data. The group also used the information to gain access to numerous individuals’ cryptocurrency accounts and wallets and steal millions of dollars of virtual currency.
