ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) – This week is Fire Prevention Week, and to spread awareness, one Ishpeming business held a fundraiser.
Outside the Ishpeming Pizza Hut, the Ishpeming Fire Department brought two trucks and plenty of staff to help out with a Wednesday night fundraiser. Ten percent of sales went to the IFD from all dine-in, carry-out and delivery meals from 4-7 p.m.
The department uses that money for the Fire Prevention Fund, which they use to purchase informational materials to hand out. The Ishpeming Fire Chief shares this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme.
“It’s very important,” said Jason Annala, IFD Fire Chief. “We want kids to be aware of smoke alarm sounds, we want them to know where to meet up outside the house if there is a fire. This year’s theme is lithium battery safety because a lot of kids have the scooters now, the e-bikes, and they’re trying to better practice themselves to charge them outside and not have them inside.”
Annala says the department appreciates the support from businesses like this.
“It’s really nice because we get a good turnout here and we hadn’t been able to do it,” Annala said. “COVID kind of shut it down. Now, this is our second year back and it’s good to get back up here.”
Annala says it’s also important to meet community members during non-emergency settings at events like these.
“There’s a lot of different parents and community members come out to this and support us,” Annala said. “We get to meet with them and meet some people you don’t usually get to meet. I’m hoping they get a great meal and get to come meet all of us and have some fun, check out the trucks, get a free fire hat and a couple pencils and be good to go.”
Fire Prevention Week is an annual event.
