Parents who would like their child to learn religious education during school hours are invited to sign-up for a new, free class.
LifeWise Academy is looking for more students as they expand their services in South Lake County.
Once a week, specialist teachers will take students out of class during lunch or recess, and they will spend that time studying a religious curriculum.
Lost Lake Elementary School in Clermont is the first school in South Lake to have kids sign-up and program Director Gwen Chambers is hoping to welcome more students.
“Our program is completely free,” said Chambers. “We believe that religious education should be available and offered to all students – this is our way of making that happen.
“Having religious education has been proven to increase a student’s attendance in school, decrease school suspensions and it has a positive impact on kids both socially and rurally.”
LifeWise Academy is a large, nationwide organization that offers students a curriculum inspired by the Bible. It is powered by The Gospel Project.
Each lesson reviews a Bible passage as well as a ‘Living LifeWise character trait. The lessons’ order and activities are flexible and can be modified as the teacher finds necessary.
The organization has secured permission from the Lake County Schools District to teach kids in their schools. Lost Lake has 15 students who each week are picked up by LifeWise for their lesson, and then they are escorted back to regular school.
The service is completely free, with funding sourced from grants and donations.
“We have had very positive feedback from the parents of our students,” said Chambers. “They like the service we can offer since religion is not taught in our schools.
“We are hoping to have more students join LifeWise Academy. There is a definite need for religious education for our children, particularly nowadays.”
LifeWise Academy takes kids up to 12th grade. For more information, visit lifewise.org.
