MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Follow the smell of freshly baked cookies, and you’ll find this week’s School of the Week — Baldwin High School.
The student-run business inside Baldwin’s College and Career Academy at Baldwin High School, The Tomahawk Shop, has been around for a while, but it’s taken off in a big way this school year. The shop is operated almost entirely by students in the school’s marketing pathway, who learn firsthand how to run a business — from customer service to product management.
“Welcome to the Tomahawk Shop!” one group of students said as customers stopped by during the lunch rush.
Junior Nolan Hill said working in the shop gives him valuable experience and confidence.
“I love the company, and it really helped me socialize more,” he said.
Among all the sodas and snacks, the biggest seller is something warm and straight from the oven — the cookies.
“Chocolate chip, sugar, candy and double chocolate,” Hill said.
Senior Brenda Hooks said the team keeps busy baking enough to meet demand.
“There’s 382 cookies in each box of chocolate chip, and I think she said we use a box of chocolate chip at least every day,” Hooks said.
By the first lunch at 11:45 a.m., they make sure at least two batches are ready to sell. Most items cost less than $2, but the lessons the students learn about teamwork and responsibility are worth much more.
The profits go right back into the business — restocking snacks, supplies, and, of course, plenty of cookie dough.
That combination of hard work, creativity, and school spirit is what makes Baldwin High’s Tomahawk Shop this week’s School of the Week.
