President and Chief Executive Officer
Long Island Association
Matt Cohen became president and chief executive officer of the Long Island Association, a major regional business organization, in 2021. Cohen’s priorities include making the region a more affordable place to live and work; spurring economic growth and creating new jobs; expanding access to childcare and housing; improving the business climate for employers, particularly small businesses; and fostering increased private investments, and more federal and state resources for the region.
Cohen previously served as the LIA’s vice president of government affairs and communications for 10 years. Prior to that, he was executive director of government relations for the Long Island Power Authority, where he oversaw government and community affairs for the country’s second largest public electric utility at the time. Before LIPA, Cohen served as Long Island director for U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, where he oversaw the Long Island region and executed the policy agenda. He began his career as an aide to the Suffolk County executive.
Additionally, Cohen is president and CEO of the LIA Foundation, the charitable arm of the LIA. He is a member of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council and serves on several nonprofit boards, including the LIA; Child Care Council of Suffolk, where he is chairman; Long Island Housing Partnership; Accelerate Long Island; and the New York League of Conservation Voters Long Island Chapter.
Cohen earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2012.
