John Lee, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, visited Tencent’s booth with Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury; Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development; Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority; and Salina Yan, Permanent Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury (Financial Services).
Forest Lin, Corporate Vice President of Tencent and Head of Tencent Financial Technology, discussed how technological innovation is enhancing interoperability between regional payment systems. This progress is further accelerated by China’s Cross-Border Interconnection Payment Gateway (CPG), a unified gateway addressing fragmented user experiences in cross-border payments caused by inconsistent standards and technology across regions.
Earlier this year, Tencent announced that it’s making payments simpler and more convenient for international travellers visiting the Chinese Mainland by expanding its cross-border payment support with Weixin Pay through the CPG scheme. Currently 20 overseas wallets, including WeChat Pay HK, Mongolia’s Hipay Wallet, and Singapore’s LiquidPay Wallet, could make payment by scanning a Weixin Pay QR code in China.
Furthermore, TenPay Global, Tencent’s cross-border payment platform and a designated inaugural foreign institution partner of CPG, is expanding the connection of international wallets and institutions to Weixin Pay through CPG to more than 20 wallets in over 10 countries and regions, such as PayPal, Venmo and ShopeePay.
Royal Chen, Vice President of Tencent Financial Technology, offered an engaging review of the evolution of cross-border payments and explored the future of borderless transactions. He said Tencent is committed to building an open, diverse and inclusive new global payment network covering various scenarios such as cross-border consumption, remittances, international commerce and more, to enable a consistent and seamless payment experience at home and abroad.
Daniel Hong, Vice President of Tencent Financial Technology, highlighted how “QR & Tap” is expanding digital payments worldwide, creating a borderless experience with one wallet for seamless use both domestically and internationally. He and the fellow panelists also shared their forward-looking view on intelligent infrastructure that powers commerce in the digital age.
At Hong Kong FinTech Week 2025, Weixin Pay, WeChat Pay HK and TenPay Global showcased their latest cross-border innovations, underscoring Tencent’s role in driving borderless payments. Beyond enhancing interoperability between international wallets and Weixin Pay, TenPay Global also demonstrated how users can now enjoy a more seamless and efficient remittance experience. By leveraging the Weixin ecosystem, TenPay Global enables users to receive funds directly into their Weixin wallets within seconds, with just a single tap, making remittance as simple as sending a message. With more than 60 global partners, TenPay Global provides remittance services across more than 100 countries and regions to the Chinese Mainland, connecting over a billion users worldwide.
Tencent Cloud also presented a comprehensive range of AI + Cloud financial technology solutions demonstrating how digital infrastructure, cloud and AI capabilities are accelerating transformation in the financial sector. The showcase featured innovations such as Tencent Yuanbao, the eKYC facial-recognition solution, the Agent Development Platform (ADP) and CodeBuddy AI assistant, each highlighting how Tencent Cloud enables financial institutions to enhance security, improve efficiency, and build intelligent digital ecosystems across global markets to create business opportunities.
Tencent Cloud now supports over 10,000 financial customers across 20 countries and regions, with nearly 400 overseas clients achieving double-digit growth. In Hong Kong, Tencent Cloud partners with leading financial institutions such as Futu Securities, Fusion Bank, Airstar Bank, AIA, and Bank of China (Hong Kong) to accelerate digital modernization.
Recent projects include helping Fusion Bank complete a next-generation core-banking system migration within 15 hours and supporting Airstar Bank’s full move to cloud operations, enabling higher performance, cost efficiency, and agility under Hong Kong’s strict compliance framework.
Hu Liming, Vice President of Tencent Cloud said, “Over the past few years, we’ve worked closely with local financial institutions to explore best practices in digital transformation. Moving forward, we will continue to invest in technology and resources to provide stable, secure, and intelligent cloud services that help our financial customers in Hong Kong and beyond accelerate their digital transformation.”
“In recent years, Hong Kong’s fintech ecosystem has flourished. We are honored to participate in the Hong Kong Fintech Week to showcase our innovative business solutions, demonstrating our commitment to advancing fintech development,” said Forest Lin, Corporate Vice President of Tencent and Head of Tencent Financial Technology. “The digital payments landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, and we will continue to build a more open and inclusive payment network and explore intelligent infrastructure and business ecosystem that will power the next era of commerce.”
Tencent representatives including Haohao Xu, Head of Tencent International Financial Public Affairs & Head of Tencent Cloud Strategy Research Institute; Dr. Yanxin Yu, Managing Director of Consulting at Tencent Cloud; Lorence Liao, Head of International AI Architecture at Tencent Cloud; and Jared Jiang, Deputy General Manager of Tencent Cloud, also shared perspectives on responsible AI adoption in financial services, Tencent Cloud’s role in intelligent financial systems, and the future of digital finance.
