Mounting a late touchdown drive in Friday night’s state semifinals put the Cody Broncs football team back in the Class 3A championship game.
Cody quarterback Cache McFadden ran for a total of four touchdowns on the night. The final score by McFadden came with just under two minutes to play and it lifted the Broncs to a 28-21 win over the Riverton Wolverines.
Riverton had tied the game with about six minutes left, then the Cody boys went on an epic march. The Broncs used up nearly five minutes on the clock and McFadden capped it off with a touchdown run.
“It was electric in the huddle,” McFadden said of the drive to victory. “Everybody really stepped up on that last drive and that’s how we were able to get in the end zone.”
This was a battle in the trenches the whole night with the Broncs line opening the way. The Broncs had nine running plays on the final drive.
“We locked in and stayed confident in our quarterback,” Broncs tackle Josh Sauers said of the late-scoring march. “We got to work and got the W.”
The scoring started on the second possession of the game for each team. McFadden scored on a 46-yard touchdown run to give the Broncs the early lead.
Back came the home team with a long-scoring drive late in the first quarter. This temporarily tied the game, then near disaster struck against the Broncs.
With just under eight minutes left in the first half, Kannon Grant caught a pass to open a drive. He went down with an injury and didn’t play much the rest of the way. Grant is the team’s leading rusher and without him for most of the game, the Broncs turned to a more wide-open offensive attack.
“I dislocated my knee cap, but I’ll be practicing again soon,” Grant said of his injury. “I’ll be okay for the title game.”
Despite the absence of their top rusher, the Broncs ground attack continued to roll. Late in the second quarter, McFadden capped off a seven-play scoring drive with his second touchdown of the night.
This scoring drive did feature some acrobatics through the air. Logan Richard caught a long pass from McFadden on the third play of the drive, then fumbled the ball but recovered it for a big gain. The Broncs scored a few plays later to retake the lead.
The two teams traded touchdowns into the fourth quarter. After the third touchdown from the Wolverines again tied the score at 21-all, the Broncs went on the decisive scoring drive to win the game. Starting on their own 24-yard line, the Broncs began their methodical march to take the lead for the final time.
Carson Smith made a couple of nice runs to put the Broncs at midfield. McFadden then showed off his scrambling skills with an 18-yard gain. The final run of the drive came on fourth down and put the Broncs back in the title game.
“The big thing was we used some clock on the last drive,” head coach Matt McFadden said. “That was important to milk the game away.”
There was still some time left on the clock for the home team. The Wolverines got the ball back at their own 36 yard line, but there would be no late comeback. Bronc Alex Sitz exploded off the line and stuffed the first play of the drive.
The tackle by Sitz set the tone for the Broncs defense. Riverton quarterback Cameron Vincent scrambled for a few yards on second down, but he couldn’t keep the drive alive. A pair of incompletions followed and the last gasp for the Wolverines was over.
“I’m very proud of the team, especially on the last five-minute drive,” the coach added. “That was huge and the guys dug deep to score the last touchdown. Then, the defense got the stop, it was a great way to end the game.”
Cody (9-1 overall) will now play Star Valley (10-0 overall) for the Class 3A State Championship on Friday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. This will be the sixth straight trip to the finals for the Cody High football team.
