WILLISTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Local religious leaders gathered at the Department of Homeland Security building in Williston on Thursday for demonstration and prayer in support of immigrant rights.
Vermont Faith Communities for Immigrant Justice organized the event, where religious leaders spoke to a crowd before collective prayer and religious songs.
Susan McMillan, an Episcopal deacon, says it’s an effort to reclaim the original tenets of their religion.
“Jesus said welcome the stranger and to care for people, and all of these policies… I’m sorry, but the people who claim to be Christian and stand behind these policies– I think we have to stand up, and stand up to that,” she said.
The protest coincided with the Feast of Saint Francis Cabrini, a holiday honoring the patron saint of immigrants.
