Now at No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings, Texas Tech is enjoying its best season in more than a decade.
For head coach Joey McGuire, the historic season brings heightened attention and stakes for a Red Raiders program that hadn’t appeared in the top 10 in the AP poll since 2013.
In a recent appearance on The Hardline on 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket (KTCK-AM), McGuire spoke about how he communicates with his team about the chance to make Texas Tech history.
“We talk about being 1-0, and 1-0, but on Sunday, whenever I addressed the team about the game and — we kind of put it to bed — the last thing I said was ‘Guys, don’t miss this opportunity because we have a chance to do something that has never been done at Texas Tech before. And we’ve got a chance, whenever it’s all said and done, to be a part of it and we get it to be a part of that for the rest of our lives. So don’t miss this opportunity,’” McGuire said.

He continued by emphasizing his focus on winning the next game on the schedule, but that grounding that in the wider context helps the team stay motivated.
“We’re always talking about 1-0, and that’s all over the building and our big deal is ‘What’s next?’’ Good things happen, what’s next, bad things happen, what’s next? But I want them to understand exactly the moment that they’re in right now and not let it pass you by. I think that gives them a little bit more of a sense of urgency of exactly what’s taking place,” McGuire said.
After a big win over No. 12 BYU last weekend, Texas Tech is sitting pretty atop the Big 12 and controls its own destiny as the season marches on. The Red Raiders host UCF Saturday for their final regular season home game of the season.
