The Longview Regional Medical Center Cardiology Team recently celebrated its 100th venous thromboembolism (VTE) procedure performed by Interventional Cardiologists Drs. Ranjan Dahal and Rajeev Singh and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. David Jayakar.
Each year, approximately 900,000 Americans are affected by VTE, and as many as 100,000 people die from blood clots, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. VTE encompasses two conditions: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs — and pulmonary embolism (PE), a life-threatening condition that occurs when a clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs.
The cardiology team at Longview Regional utilizes advanced, minimally invasive procedures — including mechanical thrombectomy — to treat blood clots and restore blood flow quickly and safely, the hospital said. This image-guided technique allows interventional cardiologists to navigate a catheter to the clot site and use specialized devices to remove or break up the clot, often preventing life-threatening complications.
