Birmingham teen turns Christmas tree removal into green business – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A Birmingham area teenager has turned holiday cleanup into a green business and is now in his fourth year of removing Christmas trees and giving them new life.
Christopher Agee, a 17-year-old Oak Mountain High School junior, spends his Christmas break hauling away trees and making sure they don’t end up in a landfill. What started as a way to make extra money and help neighbors has turned into an annual business that keeps growing.
So far this year, Agee has around 30 people signed up for his tree removal service. His pricing structure is based on tree size and width.
“5 to 6 feet will be $15. Now, if you have like a 7 foot tree, but it’s very skinny, we’ll charge you about $20. But if you have something like this here, it’s about, I don’t know, 11 feet, and it’s really wide, we’ll charge you about $25,” Agee said.
He picks up the trees in his truck and will come inside to help remove them from homes for people who need assistance.
Once loaded up, Agee brings the trees to Oak Mountain State Park where they get a second life.
“They build up habitats with those trees, but they also go in the lake to help the fish. It just kind of builds a habitat, keeps it out of the trash and puts it to use,” he said.
Agee said he’s always been driven by the business side of things, but seeing where the trees go keeps him motivated.
“Once I learned that and I started bringing them there myself, I just, you saw eagles and stuff like that who were injured and they were helping them. So you saw where they were going and saw what that cause was for,” he said.
While helping the environment, Agee hopes the experience will help him in the future. Christopher plans to get his master’s degree in business.
“I feel like this experience I’m building now, advertising, communication, will really help me out later in life,” he said.
Christopher will continue picking up trees until Jan. 5.
