Data from a 2024 report by the Public Religion Research Institute found three in 10 Americans qualified as Christian nationalism adherents or sympathizers, compared with two-thirds who qualified as skeptics or rejecters.
In an interview with PBS News Hour, Brad Onishi gave his definition of Christian nationalism as a former evangelical minister who once identified with the belief system.
“Christian nationalism is an ideology that is based around the idea that this is a Christian nation, that this was founded as a Christian nation and therefore it should be a Christian nation today and should be so in the future,” Onishi said.
Onishi added that people who identify as Christian nationalists want the federal government to declare America a Christian nation and base laws on Christian values. He added that Christian nationalists believe “real Americans” identify with the religion.
Reports have tied Christian nationalists to the January 6th insurrection, attempts to turn over the 2020 election and the aggressive immigration tactics currently taking place in the U.S. Organizations such as Christians Against Christian Nationalism are among those evangelicals who are becoming more outspoken and denouncing those beliefs, which often include underlying racism.
On Monday’s “Closer Look,” host Rose Scott spoke with Joy Johnson, the lead organizer for the Georgia group of Christians Against Christian Nationalism. CACN was founded less than a decade ago, but the Georgia chapter was activated in January. During the interview, Johnson explained how Christian nationalism is influencing American politics and how CACN is responding with a counter message that focuses on the core Christian principles of love and inclusion.
